Do Floating Keychains Actually Float? What to Look For
“Floating” is the whole promise of a boat keychain — drop your keys off the dock and they bob at the surface instead of sinking. But not every keychain sold as a float actually floats once a real set of keys is attached. Here’s what determines buoyancy and how to be sure the one you order does its job.
Whether a keychain floats is a simple physics question: the wood and hardware have to displace more weight than the keys pull down. Three things decide it.
1. The wood
Buoyancy starts with the material. Dense, oily hardwoods like teak float well and resist water; cork floats exceptionally for its size; lighter woods like maple and bamboo float but with less reserve buoyancy. Heavier or unsealed woods can waterlog over time and lose float. For a true marine float, teak is the benchmark.
2. The size and volume
A keychain floats because of how much water it displaces, so a slightly larger float carries more keys at the surface. A tiny charm-sized fob may float alone but sink the moment you add a metal key and a fob. The right float is sized for the weight it’s expected to carry — which is why we ask what’s on your key ring.
3. The hardware and keys
The split ring, any metal fob, and the keys themselves all add downward weight. A single car-style key is light; a bundle of keys, a metal bottle opener, and a chunky remote can overwhelm an undersized float. The float has to be matched to a realistic, not best-case, key load.
