How Many Custom Boat Keychains to Order
Order too few custom boat keychains and you run out mid-season, pay a second setup, and wait another two weeks. Order sensibly above your need and the per-unit price drops, you cover spares and reorders, and you never scramble before a boat show. Here’s a simple way to land on the right number for a dealership, marina, or fleet.
The math comes down to four buckets: your core need, a buffer for growth and spares, retail or giveaway stock, and the price breakpoint that makes a slightly larger run cheaper per piece.
1. Start with your core need
Count the keychains you know you’ll hand out over the next 12 months. For a dealership, that’s projected boat sales plus service loaners. For a marina, it’s slip holders and members. For a charter or rental fleet, it’s keys in service times the shapes you want on each. This is your floor — never order below it.
2. Add a buffer for spares and growth
Add 15–25% for replacements, walk-ins, staff, and the orders you didn’t forecast. Keychains get lost and given away spontaneously; running out looks worse than a small surplus that carries into next season. Engraved wood doesn’t expire, so a buffer is low-risk.
3. Decide on retail or giveaway stock
If you’ll sell keychains in a pro shop or ship store, or hand them out at shows, add that volume separately. Retail stock especially benefits from rounding up, since each unit you sell carries margin and the per-piece cost falls as the run grows.
4. Check the price breakpoints
Custom keychains get cheaper per unit at higher quantities. It’s common for the jump from one tier to the next to cost only a little more in total while dropping the per-piece price meaningfully. Always ask where the next breakpoint sits — sometimes 250 costs barely more than 200.
A quick reference
| Buyer | Core need | Suggested order | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single boat dealership | ~100 sales/yr | 250 | Handovers + service + spares + breakpoint |
| Marina / yacht club | 150 slips | 250–500 | Members + welcome gifts + pro-shop retail |
| Charter / rental fleet | 40 keys | 150–250 | Two per key in service + heavy replacement rate |
| Ship store / retailer | Retail only | 500+ | Margin per unit + best per-piece price |
Choosing for your order
When you’re between two numbers, round up to the next price breakpoint — the marginal cost is low and engraved wood keeps. If you’re unsure how your quantity maps to pricing, our product pages show typical ranges, and a quick quote gives you exact tiered pricing for your run.
